It’s less than a year since New York mobile sports betting opened for business. Opening day was like a breath of fresh air for a large group of New Yorkers who love betting on sports. For some, it meant no longer having to make the trek to neighboring New Jersey to wager legally online.

Since then, New York has ascended to the top of the rankings as the number one sports betting state in the country. It is the biggest as measured by both sports betting handle and gross betting revenue. It’s been a boon for the state’s financial coffers that get 51% of the gross revenue in the form of taxes. New Jersey, the state that used to occupy the top spot, has had to settle for second place.

Perfect Timing For NY Football Fans

With mobile sports betting becoming a reality in January of 2022, now is the first chance for New Yorkers to bet on regular season NFL games. One look at the current NFL standings heading into Week 8 makes it clear that the timing could not have been better.

When was the last time that the New York Giants, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills were all hovering at the top of the NFL standings after seven weeks of action? One would have to go quite a way back.

What the Bills have accomplished to this point in the season is of no surprise. Many experts picked them to be the best team in football this year. That has been confirmed by online sportsbooks quoting the Bills (6-1) as Super Bowl favorites at odds of +300. The part that is much more surprising is what the Giants (6-1) and Jets (5-2) have achieved so far.

Giants and Jets Emergence

It was only last year that the Giants and Jets were tied for the second-worst records in the NFL at 4-13. It only took seven  games this season for each of these teams to exceed last year’s win totals.

Looking one year further back, the Giants were 6-10 in 2020 and the Jets were an abysmal 2-14. This is a genuine change in fortunes.

Before they get too carried away, some will point out that both the Giants and Jets have had easy schedules. That argument doesn’t apply to the Bills who have already defeated the defending Super Bowl Champion Los Angeles Rams and the high-flying Kansas City Chiefs on the road.

Yes, the Giants and the Jets have played less than top tier opposition so far. Only two opponents each have a winning record through the first seven games. At the same time, few would deny that both teams have shown substantial improvement.

Betting On New York’s NFL Teams

What does all of this mean for NY sports bettors? The Giants are currently +4000 to win the Super Bowl, a pretty decent number for a team that is already on the verge of making it to the playoffs. The Jets are +6000, still, a respectable number considering they opened the season at +20000 on some mobile betting sites.

If there are any doubts that New Yorkers are raking in the dough while betting on home teams this year, note this. These three teams are a combined 15-4-1 ATS.

Of course, this should not be considered a predictor of the future. But for right now, New York NFL bettors have got to be out of their minds with glee in their first year of legally being able to bet on NFL games from the comforts of home.

Not many would have predicted that a year ago.
