After meeting in Super Bowl LVII last year, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are both among the NFL’s top teams so far in 2023 and could be on track for a Super Bowl rematch.

That raises an important question: Have the same two teams ever met in consecutive Super Bowls?

History of Super Bowl Rematches

Plenty of teams have qualified for or even won the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons.

Look no further than the Pittsburgh Steelers, which won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1975-76 and 1979-80. Two of those titles came against the Dallas Cowboys, but they were separated by two years in between.

The New England Patriots previously qualified for three straight Super Bowls from 2017-19, making them one of 11 franchises to ever make it to consecutive championship games. The Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs have also attained the feat.

The Bills made it to four consecutive Super Bowls from 1991-94, though they fell in each of them. Coincidentally, that record run of Super Bowl appearances also produced the only prior instance of the same two teams making it in back-to-back seasons.

Buffalo met Dallas in both the 1993 and 1994 Super Bowls. The Cowboys took the first meeting, 52-17, behind Super Bowl MVP Troy Aikman, who threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns. The Cowboys won 30-13 the next year as Emmitt Smith took home the game’s MVP honors after running for 132 yards and two scores.

Otherwise, there have been no other instances of the same teams meeting in consecutive Super Bowls.

Potential for a Rematch in 2023

The potential for a second-ever Super Bowl rematch in back-to-back seasons continues to look a possibility this year as the Chiefs (8-3) and Eagles (10-1) have both gotten out to strong starts in 2023 and look to again be among the NFL’s top teams.

The pair squared off last year in Super Bowl 57, playing a back-and-forth contest that Kansas City ultimately won, 38-35, on a late 27-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. Patrick Mahomes took home the game’s MVP award after throwing for 182 yards and three touchdowns while also running for 44 yards to outduel Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Including the postseason, the Chiefs finished 17-3, while the Eagles finished 16-4. Both teams are still on track to have a chance at finishing near or above those marks again this season as they head into the stretch run.

Kansas City and Philadelphia have already squared off this year on Monday Night Football. The Eagles came away with a 21-17 win in a closely fought contest.

That game could be a preview of what’s to come if the two clubs can find their way back to the title game again.
