DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM might be the dominant players so far in the US sports betting market, but others are also making an impact. PointBet is one of the sportsbooks continuing to challenge the frontrunners.

PointsBet is already an established option in many legalized states. Their popular online platform is live in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, and West Virginia. Unsurprisingly, they aren’t resting on their laurels. In fact, they are ready to go in several new jurisdictions.

PointsBet Virginia

Virginia sports bettors will be happy to learn that as of December 2021, PointsBet is available in their state. They gained market access through an exclusive partnership agreement with the Colonial Downs Group. PointsBet took its first Virginia wager on December 15th. That brought the number of states in the PointsBet portfolio to eight.

Former NBA great and Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson will serve as the brand’s ambassador. The Virginia launch will have been particularly pleasing for him, as it is his home state.

According to Johnny Aitken, PointsBet USA CEO:

“We are thrilled to be launching in Virginia with our partner Colonial Downs, now bringing our best-in-market technology to such a passionate sports community. Virginian sports bettors will now have access to the fastest online sports betting product with the most betting options, including robust in-play capabilities.”

Virginia sports bettors enjoy access to all of PointBet’s betting markets and bonus offers.

PointsBet Louisiana

When Louisiana voters in 55 of 64 parishes approved sports betting for its residents, it opened the door to as many as 41 online sports betting licenses. Those licenses are being allocated to casinos, race tracks and the state’s lottery.

To date, a number of operators have already received licensing and have begun retail operations. Among those already licensed are DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars Sports, BetMGM and Betfred. PointsBet will also be joining the mix as Louisiana online betting is on the cusp of launch.

PointsBet have teamed up with Saints legend Drew Brees to serve as the brand’s ambassador. A firm launch date has not yet been announced for mobile wagering. But the hope is the operators will be live by the time the NFL playoffs roll around in the middle of January 2022.

PointsBet Maryland

In November of 2021, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission confirmed that PointsBet met all of the requirements to secure a sports betting license in Maryland. Prior to this notification, the Australian-based operator had already signed a partnership agreement with Riverboat on the Potomac. Although technically located in Colonial, VA, that’s not a problem because the state of Maryland controls the Potomac River and all riverfront property.

The first legal retail bets were made in Maryland in December 2021. Now, the final details are being thrashed out for the online market to go live. The interested parties are working hard, but the launch date is as yet unknown.

More States to Come in 2022?

As things stand, more than half of U.S. states have legal sports betting. That means PointsBet still has plenty of room for growth. Challenging the established major players is not easy. But sports fans are eager to try new products and appreciate choice.

Looking ahead, other states attracting attention include Ohio and North Dakota.

Also worth keeping an eye on is the 2022 election cycle. Which other states might tackle sports betting initiatives and legislation? That’s the question PointsBet and others are pondering with interest. With an industry moving this fast, you can’t afford to be left behind.
